How to get the best wedding images, hints, and tips… As I’m the sort of person who believes in sharing the knowledge that I’ve accrued from over 500 weddings I thought it would be a good idea to do so with this article.
Before I get into it I just need to cover a few things. As a wedding photographer, my primary goal is to make things run smoothly so that you can enjoy your day. Essentially, your wedding is an event that needs careful management; in the main, so you can have a day where everything has been taken care of. This is your day as a couple where you need to enlist as much help as possible. Everyone who is there can do small things that when you put them all together will allow us to capture the images of your special day.

Hint and tips No1: Get as much done in advance as possible.
As I mentioned above, this wedding is probably the biggest event you are ever going to organise. But you’re not alone. Anyone can help you coordinate your day. Wedding planners are nearly always involved but your family and friends are there to help. Consider having a meeting with your nearest and dearest, asking them to pitch in whichever way they can. That then allows you to focus on the bigger picture. Once you have booked your venue, your next port of call should be your wedding photographer. I book weddings as far in advance as people ask for them – the summer is obviously extremely busy but Easter and winter weddings are becoming very popular.
Hint and tips No2: The Wedding dress
Wedding dresses are not the most functional item of clothing you’ll ever wear. My advice to all my brides – get your images done as early in the day as possible. Your dress will look pristine, of that we’re sure, but it will pick up all sorts of stuff as the day goes on into the evening. This is why I take the couple away immediately after the service to get as much coverage as I can. This is why I ask to whisk you away immediately after the service. Relax, let your guests have a glass of champagne and we can then capture the dress when it is looking at its very best.
Hint and tips No3: Time is everything
Like most things in life, time tends to be the thing we consider the most. It is no different on your wedding day. When you are getting into your wedding dress I would urge you to get into it as early as you can. If you think you need two hours to get ready with hair, makeup and dress then add another hour. It’s best to play safe and have time left. I’ll be there for the day and I will work around you. Some of the best coverage we get is during bridal preparation. If you have half an hour spare that’s always more preferable.
Hint and tips No4: Winter weddings and light
As I’ve mentioned in a previous blog, natural light and how I use it plays a big role in how your images will turn out. As the evenings become longer and fall earlier during winter there is a consideration here. As much as possible I encourage my wedding couples who have a winter wedding to have the service as early as is reasonably possible. The simple fact is the earlier the wedding is, the more good light we have to play with. Artificial light can work but nothing beats natural light.
